Although numerically we are getting a bit thin on the ground, we still maintain a faithful nucleus of members. In common with other branches 'Tempus fugit' and we just can't persuade the majority of WRAC to come out of the woodwork. But we soldier on!
Both our December Christmas party and our anniversary lunch in January had to be called off due to the weather - blithering snow. Undaunted we press on with our programme and in February had a very interesting talk by the Samaritans, then, in April, it was 'Treats for Troops'. This is a local organisation, formed by an ex-WAAF and her ex-Army husband. Briefly we fill a shoe box with small items, pens, pencils, toothbrushes and paste, shampoo, shower-gel etc., all things which will be of practical use to the troops on deployment. We told a local cafe owner about the scheme and he came up trumps. Only downside was I had to carry 200 sachets of brown sauce and 200 of tomato ketchup home, and they weren't light. Apparently 'compo' rations have not improved over the years. We also send socks & 'beanie' hats to wear under their helmets. BOGOF offers in the shops are an excellent source.
Things went somewhat awry at our May meeting: we arrived at our venue, and could not gain entry, so our MOCK TRIAL with Alan Painter JP had to be postponed. Afterwards we found out there had been a flood. We take on the WRNS for the annual quiz in June; July 3rd is Veterans Day, and in July someone from the Council is going to tell us what happens after we put the recycling in the bin.
Congratulations to those who arranged the lunch at the Victory Services Club - the Luton girls really enjoyed it, and it was a jolly good AGM all round. It was made special for our Branch because Eleri Pirie, our hardworking Treasurer, was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation.
